There are a lot of considerations you have to make when you decide to carry a concealed weapon. You have to choose the right gun, holster and wardrobe. Each of these items is uniquely important, and if anything does not feel like a good fit, immediate adjustments should be made.
Responsible gun ownership is more than just choosing hardware, though. It comes with a variety of different responsibilities such as continued firearms education and many hours of practice on the range.
Keeping Your Holster Clean
Another gun ownership duty that is less glamorous but highly important is equipment maintenance. This includes cleaning your gun to ensure that it properly functions to specifications anytime you use it. You also clean the attire you wear when you carry a firearm, whether it is concealed carry dress clothes for work or shorts and a polo shirt for recreation. So why wouldn’t you take some time to occasionally clean your holster too? Taking the utmost care of the one item that secures your weapon to your body should be a priority for any owner of a firearm.
Leather Holsters
Leather holsters made out of animal hide have rougher textures that tend to attract dirt and grime. This is a threat to the longevity of the firearm that it houses. One of the best methods to keep a leather holster clean is with a basic wash every three to four months using warm water and glycerin soap. There are also specialty leather lotions on the market that, unlike other oils or detergents, will not severely soften the material. You can wipe away superficial contaminants, such as dirt or dust, that settle on the holster anytime with a dry towel. A dry brush with soft bristles can also be used to help with stubborn stains.
Kydex Holsters
Kydex is a rigid plastic holster that offers you durability and custom molding for your gun. Just like any other material, though, it requires occasional attention. A damp cloth is often sufficient enough to remove any debris that could accumulate over time. To deeply clean the inside and outside of your Kydex holster, however, use lukewarm water and mild soap. It is then important to let it thoroughly dry to avoid any rust formation on the steel hardware.
Purchasing firearm equipment is an investment of your time and your money, and you want to make sure that everything is always in proper working condition. A regular maintenance routine that includes your holster is one of the best ways to accomplish this important task.
